Swedish Massage
Smiling woman receives massage on her head
When most Americans imagine massage, they are thinking of a method and set of techniques traditionally referred to as Swedish massage.

Swedish massage is your classic, full body therapeutic massage, where the main intents are increased full body circulation, and the promotion of comfort and relaxation, through the application of mostly light and medium pressure. If you have a stiff neck or a sore shoulder from a particularly strenuous day, a Swedish massage can be great for softly working out a few small kinks and tender spots. Some common reasons to get a Swedish Massage include:
  • Respiratory or circulatory issues/disorders
  • General back pain
  • Tendonitis
  • Headaches or reoccurring migraines
  • Acue muscular spasms
  • Sore joints
  • Anxiety and stress

Patients who are very muscular or overweight, are suffering from more chronic and repetitive physical stress, like athletes or construction or heavy moving, may find more satisfaction in receiving a deep tissue massage. Anyone who desires consistently stronger pressure, or has acute and specific pain or major knots to work out, will probably benefit more from a deep tissue massage as well.

When our massage therapists come into your home to perform a Swedish massage, they will bring with them a professional massage table, and you will be able to undress to whatever extent you feel comfortable (we recommend at least down to your underwear - the fewer obstructions the better for the therapist to properly apply traditional techniques). Of course, a towel or cover will be used and properly draped to protect your privacy at all times. You and your therapist can decide which professional level lotions, creams, or oils will be used to perform the massage.

Techniques of Swedish Massage

Traditionally, there are five principal techniques used in sequence during the performance of your in home Swedish Massage:
  • Effleurage: using the palms and fingertips for gentle to medium pressured long sweeping and stroking - this begins to waken the body and focus your attention on the sensations, and can begin to work out kinks.
  • Petrissage: using the thumbs and fingers to gently, but with pressure, knead and squeeze the muscles. Knuckles or the base of the hand can be used here as well.
  • Tapotement/Rhythmic Tapping: this stage consists of rhythmically tapping the muscles of the body with fists or the side of cupped hands. This serves to both relax and loosen the muscles while simultaneously energizing and awakening them.

  • Friction: the hands of the massage therapists are rubbed vigorously together to create heat, which is transferred or rubbed into the skin of the patient. Sometimes direct friction created by rubbing the hands on the skin can be used too.

  • Hacking/Vibration or Shaking : this is your stereotypical karate-chop style massage technique. the side, heel, or tips of the hand are used to shaken and loosen the muscles.
